Spanish term

la más interesante de ellas

Spanish to English Other Mathematics & Statistics
Doesn´t this last little part seem to be hanging?

b) El punto de partida es la necesidad de un decisor de seleccionar, entre un conjunto de alternativas posibles y en la mayoría de los casos contrapuestas (estrategias, inversiones, activos, etc.) la más interesante de ellas.

Below I have pasted what I have so far. Any improvements?

a) The starting point is the need for a decision maker when faced with a set of possible mostly-opposing alternatives (strategies, investments, assets, etc.).

Discussion

Javier Herrera (X) Jul 10, 2004:
I would just say the truth: "I feel something's missing" (and in this case I do think it's just through lack of attention), rather than "the text is wrong, you can't write".
Non-ProZ.com Jul 10, 2004:
Here is what I now have: a) The first step is the decision makers need, when faced with a set of possible mostly-conflicting alternatives, which include strategies, investments, goods and the like, to chose the most desirable one.

Javier: Thank you for your comments. It is a really crummy text. How do I tell this to my client delicately?
Javier Herrera (X) Jul 9, 2004:
Your confusion probably comes because a comma is missing just after the parenthesis.

just go back to the verb

It's "seleccionar....la más interesante de ellas"

The starting point is the decision-maker's need, when faced with a set of possible mostly-opposing alternatives (strategies, investments, assets, etc.), to choose the most interesting one.

or: The starting point is the decision-maker\'s need to select the most interesting option from a set of possible alternatives which are usually opposed to one another (strategies, investments, assets, etc.).

It looks to me as if you\'re on the right track, Edward. \"Viable\" may be a nice substitute for interesante. Also that \"mostly\" gets a little pesky; what do you think of this? :

The first step is the need by/for the decision-maker to select the most viable option from a set of often conflicting alternatives (strategies, investments, assets, etc.).
Peer comment(s):

disagree Jane Lamb-Ruiz (X) : they are not opposed ..the accompany them..they are literally "in the next column"

I think you are out of line disagreeing with an aspect of my answer that went over and beyond the question. What you are disagreeing with wasn't even asked by the asker.
agree Maisar : but maybe "attractive" rather than "interesting"

sure. was going for clearing up edward's doubts more than anything; not too attached to the translation of the actual sentence.
agree Sol : Yes, you answered the question :)

to select..... the most interesting of them all

Hi Edward

Here's another option:

:::::::: The departure point for the decision-maker is to select, among an array of possible options (which are often conflicting / incompatible) the most interesting of them all.

Good luck!

the most appealing OR profitable

The starting point is the need for a decision maker to choose the most appealing alternative and, in most cases, the strategies, investment and assets they entail OR that go along with them.

that's how it fits in, IMO....

In English, if you say the MOST APPEALING it implies the Spanish notion of un conjunto...which is usually not spelled out in English.

contrapuesto is not OPPOSED here. It means in the next column of things to do in a table, for example. They are strategies, investments and assets that GO ALONG with the choice made.

Alternativa 1------[contrapuesta] estrategia, inversion y activos
Alternativa 2------[contrapuesta] estrategia, inversion y activos

Each choice ENTAILS strategies, investment and assets...they are contrapuesta to the alternative..they ACCOMPANY THEM or the alternative or choice ENTAILS THEM....

disagree Maisar : The strategies, investments and assets form the range of alternatives, and the decision maker has to choose between them.
23 mins
no..they are alternative 1, 2, 3 etc. and they have strategies, investment and assets they go with them..or in proper business English...the choice entail strategies, investement and assets
neutral Sol : It's ONE decision, not two, unless it's in horrible Spanish. I think you're trying to read too much into it. The alternatives are of the types stated: estrategias, etc. "Contrapuestas" means "to be compared".
2 hrs
disagree Javier Herrera (X) : Agree with maisar. Contrapuestas is not a noun, it's an adjective qualifying alternativas. The three things between brackets are kinds of alternativas.

my version of the sentence

The first step is for a decision maker to compare a group of alternatives of diverse types, which include estrategies, investments, goods, etc., and choose the best one.
Peer comment(s):
