washout period

Adolescents must be inpatients at time of enrollment. When in the opinion of the investigator the patients’ psychiatric condition has adequately stabilized, the patient may be transferred to a less restrictive treatment. If indicated after screening, there is a flexible washout period of three to seven days.

What is the meaning of washout period here.

drug-free period

The washout period is a phase at the end of a clinical trial in which patients receive no treatment, to "wash out" the drugs used from their bodies.

I beg your pardon, that should read a phase *before the start* of a clinical trial! It's to ensure that any other medicines the patient has been taking don't affect the results.
