Discussion

yvonnewang Mar 16, 2010:

regular senior secondary school

As the question specifically aimed for PRC only, terms used in Taiwan would not be appropriate.

According to "Statistical Communiqué on National Educational Development in 2008" by Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China dated 17 July 2009, the ordinary xiao xue (primary schools) and zhong xue (secondary schools) are included into basic education.

The term "high school" often includes both junior high school and senior high school, thus in this case would not be appropriate as junior high school is already grouped into basic education.

In PRC, senior secondary schools (the stage after basic education) consist of regular senior secondary schools 普通高中, adult secondary schools 成人高中, and regular vocational schools 职业高中.

Further readings suggested that 高级中学=高中.

王女士,

收到您的来信,非常感谢您对此问题的关注。

在中国教育对外开放的过程中,由于受不同国家(英国、美国等)、不同国际组织(OECD,
UNESCO等)的影响以及与他们交往的需要,在某些词语的翻译上,形成了不同的译法。

比如,您来信所指的:Regular Senior Secondary School即等同于Regular High School,
指普通高中,区别于职业高中和中等师范学校。

而High School有时被用来指“高中阶段”,包括普通高中、职业高中和中等师范学校。

供您参考。

Example sentence:

The number of regular senior high schools was 15,206, a decrease of 475 from the previous year.

The single structure of senior secondary education has been remarkably improved.

6 years high school are usually split into 2: junior & senior hiugh school.

In Philippines, we only have 4 years of high school (or secondary) education.

secondary education/high school: 4 to 6 years depending on education system.
junior high school = year 1-3 = grades 7 - 9
senior high school = year 4-5 = grades 10 - 12

People's Republic of China (China): zhong xue (中学; literally, middle school), consisting of chu zhong (初中; literally beginning middle) from grades 7 to 9 and gao zhong (高中; literally high middle) from grades 10 to 12

Check this out for various systems of secondary education.

"ordfinary" to be differentiated from "experimental" or other specialzed high school. Thre are a lot of experimental high schools in China, Taiwan, India.

As to educational level:
high school or secondary school or middle school = 中学
depending on type of school system: 4 - 6 years
4 years high school => simply call it high school or secondary school or middle school
6 years high school is split into:
高中 = junior high school, Grades 7 -9, Form 1 -3
初中 = senior high school, junior college, Grades 10-12, Form 4 - 6

Peer comment(s):

agree lbone : Previously we often used "middle school" for 中学. However, more and more people use "high school" recently. "Senior" is usually used to modify 高中. "Regular" might be better for 普通 in the education system, but it depends.

感恩!
agree LJX : I think "ordinary" is okay, probably for distinguishment with what is called "experimental school". "Senior secondary" could also be considered as an alternative to "senior high".

agree Katie Spillane (X) : I've seen this translated more often as "Normal" than "regular" but normal does sound more awkward.
