English term

highways and freeways

English to Arabic Other Other traffic regulations
As far as I am able to find both have the same meaning in Arabic (al-turuq al-sari'ah) but because different regulations apply to them in my country, the client needs to different terms. Any ideas?

Non-ProZ.com Jul 26, 2005:
The difference In Australia, a highway is a distinct type of road from freeways and motorways. The word highway is generally used to mean major roads connecting large cities, towns and different parts of metropolitan areas. Metropolitan highways often have traffic lights at intersections, and rural highways usually have only one lane in each direction. The words freeway or motorway are generally reserved for the most arterial routes, almost always with no traffic light intersections and usually significantly straightened and widened. A motorway has a toll, whereas a freeway is free of charge.

What is the different in regulations? If a distinction is to be made, it will have to reflect that difference.

in dictionary: الطريق الحرة

So, in Arabic dictionary, they both stand for الطريق but it's the fees to distinguish them according to the links. In Eng>Arb dictionary, however, it's the term الحر or العام that makes the difference.

الطرق السريعة المجانية والطرق السريعة ذات الرسوم

I'm not sure about the difference in regulations between highways and freeways, but I think freeways are toll-free, while highways are not. In other words, highways are طرق سريعة بها رسوم مرور, and freeways are طرق سريعة بلا رسوم مرور أو مجانية

After reading your explanation, I became less sure about my answer. According to your description, highway would correspond either to طرق سريعة or to طرق دائرية (literally \"ring roads\"), but freeways also corresponds to طرق سريعة. I guess it depends mostly on the country in which the arabic text will be used

neutral Dina Abdo : although it's true, in Arabic it's different. الطريق السريعة in many Arabice countries are ALWAYS toll free

الطرق السريعة لقصيرة والطرق السريعة الطويلة

Based on Samuel's description, I can find no better fitting definition.
However Sakhr defines highway as طريق عام and freeway as طريق سريع. Ectaco however uses both for highway amd defines freeway as طريق المرور السريع. Maybe freeway could also be defined as الطريق السريع الحر since there are no stop lights or intersections. It is up to Sam to decide according to the context they are used.
