Vin d'origine Western Cape
Kumala, Merlot-Pinotage 2012
Western Cape, Afrique du Sud / Vin d'origine Western Cape /
Prix: 11,95 $ / Code: 10489743

: On the other hand, I think this is a specific expression with a special meaning; I don't think it means just 'comes from'. / Well, to use your own words, it didn't seem like a "serious, well-thought" answer. Peer comments are 'to help asker decide'.

I read the first 3 words. I did not pay attention to the next quoted phrase. But really, is that worth a 'neutral', just for the sake of it?//My track record speaks for itself. Won't dignify provocateur with any further answer.

Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée

"Wine of Orgin Scheme
Importance of origin
Because the role of origin is so important, an origin control system has for many years been in place in the traditional winelands of Europe, to protect both the producer and consumer. The two factors which play the most important role in determining the character and quality of a wine are nature (soil, climate and location) and the human hand (cultivar choice, viticultural practices and winemaking techniques). Of these two, nature is considered to be the more important factor with a greater influence. In certain areas vines grow better and within the South African wine-producing areas there are differences in soil, climate and location which cause wines to vary from region to region.
If a wine claims origin, it is the statutory regulations which ensure that the wine really is from that origin. When the term 'Wine of Origin? or the abbreviation 'W.O.? together with the name of a production area, such as Stellenbosch, Durbanville or Robertson appears on a label, it confirms that 100% of the grapes from which the wine was made come from that specific area. Well I've been thinking of Tony's objections to "Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée" or AOC.
I can understand his gripes.
The obvious solution would be to avoid the capitals, like in the French senate document and go for "appellation d'origine contrôlée Cap occidental"

: I think that's unwise; even though it may be a near equivalent, AOC does not exist outside France (AFAIK), so this would lead to an aberration. Yes, but even if it is an equivalent, it simply cannot be used for wines from outside France.

sorry Tony, this is the exact equivalent for South Africa (http://www.wine.co.za/Misc/Page_Detail.aspx?PAGEID=296). Given the context (SA) there is no ambiguity whatsoever.// You can't possibly be more restrictive than the sénat français itself who use it

Discussion
As you say, describing something as an 'appellation d'origine contrôlée' is fine, because that is an explanation; but to go from there to calling it an 'AOC' wine is in my view a step too far — and one I doubt even the Sénat would condone.
"Western Cape (AOC)" might work — it is often used in brackets in FR as in EN.
