O termo se refere às descrições investigativas.

Piaget usava vários procedimentos, vários testes envolvendo perguntas que ele fazia às crianças, para compreender através das respostas que estas crianças davam, seu funcionamento cognitivo. Eu creio que "investigative descriptions" seja uma descrição dos testes que ele fazia e o pronome "them' se refira a elas... Mas como não estou vendo o texto completo, não tenho certeza...
