Discussion

Leyal Nov 27, 2006:
Balaban is absolutely right. Tavuk balığı = (Mediterranean) poor cod
ASSION (asker) Nov 27, 2006:
Note title:
As I looked the sources you have given especially at academic papers they mostly use one to one translation. Some ofthe seamen told that this is known as tavuk balığı bcs of the the colour of the meat. I think thats why they are calling as milkfish, the meat is as white as milk. Anyway I am glad that we reached the same conclusion that it's a HANI

I found the answer at Alan Davidson's Mediterranian Seafood. The additional info comes from the seamen.

Balaban Cerit Nov 27, 2006:
I'm glad that you have found the answer to your question, that is what matters. However, there seems to be a problem with part of the additional information you have given. It might be beneficial for you to take a glance at the addendum to my answer.
ASSION (asker) Nov 27, 2006:
Correction This milk fish is not 'süt balığı'. This fish is called HANI (tavuk balığı) in Turkish. Hani at turkish seas are not that big as it is found in oceans. So all answers returned to me is wrong. But thanks for their effort to help me.

Wikipedia notes that this fish (Chanos chanos) is known in Turkish as: süt balığı
http://tr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gonorynchiformes

It is used in some other academic papers, one instance is:

There seems to be a problem with part of the additional information you have given.

When we look at this comprehensive source:

Türkiye Tür Listeleri - Kemikli Balıklar:
http://www.biltek.tubitak.gov.tr/bilgipaket/canlilar/TR_tur_...

we can see that "trisopterus minutus capelanus" is the fish known as "tavuk balığı". It is known as "poor cod" or as "cod" in English.

After an initial research, it seems that neither the fish known as "bangus" nor "milkfish" is related to "cod" or "trisopterus minutus capelanus".

Furthermore, in the source mentioned above, it can be seen that fishes belonging to the Serranidae (Hani Balıkları) family in Turkey are not called "tavuk balığı". This fact can be corroborated by researching other sources.

The Serranidae (Hani Balıkları) fish family in Turkey according to Biltek:
Anthias anthias (Linnaeus, 1758) (Berber Balığı)
Callanthias ruber (Rafinesque, 1810) (Berber Balığı)
Epinephelus aeneus (E.Geoffroy Saint-Hilarie, 1817) (Lahos)
Epinephelus alexandrinus (Valenciennes, 1828) (Lahos )
Epinephelus caninus (Valenciennes, 1843) (Orfoz)
Epinephelus guaza (Linnaeus, 1758) (Orfoz)
Ephinephelus haifensis Ben-Tuvia, 1953 (Orfoz, Börtlek, Arap)
Mycteroperca rubra (Bloch, 1793) (Taş Hanisi)
Polyprion americanus (Schneider,1801) (İskorpit Hanisi)
Serranus cabrilla (Linnaeus, 1758) (Asıl Hani)
Serranus hepatus (Linnaeus, 1758) (Benekli Hani)
Serranus scriba (Linnaeus, 1758) (Çizgili Hani)

As a final note, "tavuk balığı" is sometimes called as "mezgit", this can also be seen in the source mentioned above.

Dear ASSION, I have to add a final note here to clear up a possible misunderstanding: I haven't reached the conclusion that this fish is a HANI. As I noted above, according to my on-line research it isn't a HANI. But since you have conducted a more extensive research on this subject and you are satisfied with the result, there is no problem.
