I found a definition for this term, but I still don't know how to say it in English.
Thanks,
Karen

Thanks,

lights up the tires
It seems as though there is a light that that comes on, a brake light, that appears on the sides, perhaps in the hub, for lateral view. That`s what the definition tells me.
But the context tells me that Mattias might be 'firing up the tires', figuratively, getting ready to join the race.
I would need lots more context to be sure, as this is not my arena!;-)

: I think "firing up" : strong acceleration, drive wheels are turning idle, tires heat up, smoke is generated

yes, firing up sounds right to me, good imagery

burn rubber
The reference is to making the tyres smoke when braking hard or accelerating hard, and heat is generated by friction as the tyres slip.
