Glossary entry (derived from question below)
French term or phrase:
intérêt patrimonial (d'un élément de l'environnement naturel)
English translation:
(natural) heritage index
French term
intérêt patrimonial (d'un élément de l'environnement naturel)
Most cases of "heritage interest" I have come across refer to the built environment, and I don't think this could be the "proprietary interest" that this is translated as in other contexts.
Do we speak of the "heritage interest" of a wildlife area? Or is there a more specific term?

worth protecting
Depending on your context, you might be able to work it into [elements of the natural environment which are] "worth protecting" or "need to be protected".
Can you give us the whole sentence?
Best,
Jocelyne

Based on your added comment, it sounds like you do need to use some sort of "value index", especially if it appears as a stand alone title. Rachel's suggestion below looks promising.
Yes, thanks for your input in any case and sorry I wasn't clearer at first. |

: Perhaps OK in a general context but not for an environmental impact study where specific terms are defined and used throughout.

Thanks Alan. You likely saw my added note in which I concur that my suggestion is not appropriate in this context.

I had an idea you meant it was the heading in a table or something rather than just part of a sentence

Abstract
Conservation planning based on the occurrence of rare species has been criticized as being too limited in scope to conserve biodiversity as a whole. Conversely, planning based on indicator taxa may lack sufficient focus to conserve those species in greatest need of conservation. An alternative approach is to identify a variety of species at risk that are associated with areas of conservation value, which is defined based on species-independent characteristics. We identified potential indicators of conservation value using occurrence data on species at risk and independent information on conservation value that incorporated indices of ecosystem integrity

This uses "conservation value indicator" - "CVI":
(from among many instances)
Two mutually non-exclusive types of indicators are presented. The ‘Standard Indicators’ are based on the
existing protocol of summing the geometric means of the species indices, and here rely on conventional,
unrefined and refined habitat indices. These provides an introspective assessment of the ‘health’ of the
wintering waterbird community within Scotland, in a fashion comparable to that used for UK and England
waterbird indicators (Figure A). The ‘Conservation Value Indicator’ is similar to the Standard Indicator, except
the individual species indices are weighted by the numeric importance of Scottish to the wider national (GB)
and international (East Atlantic flyway) populations, and are based on refined habitat indices alone because
the refined indices offer the only source of habitat-specific estimates of numbers within Scotland (Figure B).

I'm sorry for the delay getting back to you, I was trying to get some feedback from the client. This is an excellent suggestion, but I have decided to go with the more conservative "natural heritage interest" for the moment. Thanks for your input. |

Discussion
"L’intérêt patrimonial des différentes unités de milieu de la zone d’étude est résumé dans le tableau suivant. Un indice d’intérêt patrimonial a été attribué en fonction de la flore et pour la faune. Leur cumul permet de définir un indice global d’intérêt patrimonial."
The table then has columns headed "indice flore", "indice faune" and "indice global d’intérêt patrimonial". So it does need to be something that can stand alone.
