Diviser en ligne

French to English Other Mathematics & Statistics Elementary CE2 level division method
Hello,
This is from the description of skills a student must acquire in CE2 in France. See last line.

Having grown up in the US, I don't recall having learned or used this method. Anyone know its proper name? Here is a video that shows exactly what it refers to: https://maitrelucas.fr/lecons/diviser-en-ligne-cm1-cm2/

Many thanks!

short division (but see below)

This is basically a slightly different way of performing what is known as short division, ie. division by a single-digit divisor. I've never seen it done exactly this way, but the process outlined on the wikihow page below is not so different, though superficially it looks quite different. So personally I would just call this short division in English. I'm ready and willing to be corrected on this though.

Actually, the key difference is that your French beginner version of short division attempts to keep (most of) the basic division sum on one line, albeit with some calculations added below. Hence the name "division en ligne". The term "linear dvision" has other connotations in English, so it's best to avoid that. But "short division on one line" might be an almost precise translation of "division en ligne".

agree Bourth : Good grief! So typically French: concentrate on learning the names of the numbers rather than finding an exact answer! No wonder kids have trouble learning.

divide sequently

For me it's about dividing in an orderly row all the numbers in the lines above, with or without remainder.
