French term

tire-fond TH

French to English Tech/Engineering Mechanics / Mech Engineering Concerns fitting a door with shutter that winds up
I have found several translations for tire-fond (e.g. lag screw), but I was wondering what "TH" meant. Does it change the meaning? The exact phrase is:
"Tire-fond TH 10*60"
Thanks!

Discussion

Tony M May 29, 2010:
not 'wood screw' Although tire-fonds may very often be used for screwing into wood, they are rather different in form, and would not, I believe, ever be alternatively described as 'woodscrews' (which almost invariably have slotted heads) — apart from the fact that they only exist in the relatively larger gauges, as I understzand it, the specific feature of a tire-fond is that it has to be screwed in using a spanner of some kind, instead of a screw-driver.

Note that another translation, at least for certain types of tire-fond, is 'coach screw'
ST Translations (asker) May 28, 2010:
Hi Catharine, could this also be a "hexagon head wood screw" or is that something different?

@ ST Translations
I realised I haven't answered your question - does it change the meaning - hexagonal head is just a qualifier - a hexagonal head on the screw as opposed to square or flat etc. I'm not a specialist but I think lag screws are most commonly found with hex(agonal) heads.

agree Tony M : 'hex head' is probably more common; and no, lag screws are very often (traditionally) found with square heads, hence why it might be specifically stated
