French term
un battement valgus important
French to English
Medical
Medical (general)
serious knee injury
Swiss text. This appears in an application/statement of claims filed with a Swiss court following a ski accident. Skier E arived from above hitting the ski of skier S, twisting his leg round and partially dislocating (subluxation) his knee with tearing of anterior and posterior cruciate ligaments, meniscofemural ligament tibial collateral ligament medial collaberal ligament, rupture de toute la capsule interne. During the medical examination following the accident the orthopaedic surgeon notes:
"en extension, un battement valgus important, un tiroir postérieur en flexion à 90° il y a un très leger recurvtum mais minime."
I realise that valgus is used in English meaning twisted way from body but can't see what battement can mean here - have found by googling "battement en valgus" but that's it.
I'll also be posting separately "tiroir posterior"

significant medial laxity - increased valgus motion
As I read it, the "battement valgus" refers to the movement of the lower leg with respect to the femur during examination. The laxity of the MCL allows an abnormal range of valgus motion.

a significant valgus deformity
The use of battement is certainly unsettling in this context. "Battement de jambes" signifies the leg action during swimming. Perhaps this image of the injured leg splayed laterally as though performing the frog kick of breast stroke was in the surgeon's mind?
In any case, the injury described in the context could certainly give rise to a valgus deformity.
