French term

taquet de garde

French to English Tech/Engineering Ships, Sailing, Maritime pleasure craft (deck fittings)
One of the deck fittings on a medium-sized cabin cruiser.

I know that a 'taquet' is some kind of 'cleat', of course; but I don't know what the special 'de garde' type is for or does?

No further context, it just comes in a list of fittings...
Proposed translations (English)
1 +1 protective cleat
2 safety cleat (?)

safety cleat (?)

Though this term appears to refer to a number of different things (cleats that stow below deck when not in use, etc.), one sense might apply:

If the rope slips from your hand, a safety cleat automatically engages the rope and stops the ...

I would even imagine a "backup/safety cleat" to hold a line should the primary cleat fail. Like wearing belt AND braces in the bosun's chair ...
