French term
Les pôles générateurs de trafic
French to English
Social Sciences
Transport / Transportation / Shipping
transport planning
I realise that this refers to the places and infrastructures which generate a lot of traffic (of all kinds) but, although it appears in plenty of French documents, I don't seem to be able to find a standard translation in English. Any knowledge or reasonable invention greatly appreciated :)

areas/structures/infrastructures/facilities
amenities etc. which generate traffic.
I don't like "hub" in this context since it smacks too much of facilities (etc.) designed to function as hubs, notably in transport and logistics (as well as IT).
Here I take it we are talking about large shopping centres, sports facilities, business districts, etc. around which traffic will be particularly dense at times.
I'd also argue with the French since these infrastructures (etc.) do not actually generate traffic, not directly at least. I'd say they concentrate it or, of you want to retain generate, that they generate (motor) traffic congestion.
Looking at a business district for instance, the traffic will be generated in any case, since people have to go to their place of work, wherever that might me (even dispersed). If anything, a properly designed facility of the kind addressed (I assume) should, if it is given all due attention and accompanying work, actually reduce (motor) traffic, assuming appropriate means of public transport are set up.
Fuller context might help refine the translation solution.

Comment: "Thanks Bourth, My question didn't throw up an obvious standard UK translation so I just made my own up - but I agree with all the points you made."

Note from asker:
Thanks Kashew, but I've just looked up this phrase and it doesn't seem to be in common use so I suppose I'm back to using my own interpretation. The problem with the word traffic these days is that it only seems to appy to internet traffic when looked up on the net! |

traffic nodes
In urban planning, the French word pôle is equiv. to English word node. Also, this deals with Bourth's criticism of the source phrasing. Ahh, the power of English to simply slap two nouns together -- the first modifying the second without having to be clear about the exact relationship (?causation?coincidence?) between the two!
