German term

Hoffläche

German to English Tech/Engineering Architecture Urban planning
Discussion about a building to be pulled down in the 1930's in Germany, because:
Dieses Gebaeude nimmt den umliegenden Haeusern die nach den heutigen Grundsaetzen des Staedtebaues unbedingt notwendige Hofflaeche weg.

I think I understand what is meant, a sort of space where the houses might have a yard - might there be a term in urban planning or architecture that covers it exactly? Is it derived from the meaning of Hof as a halo, a 'surround space'?
Thank you.

Peer comment(s):

agree jccantrell : Yeah, this is usually the parking area surrounded by the building (or its neighbors), away from the street.

agree Andrew Catford : Agree on the term, but the uses are/ were much wider than parking. Drying the washing, childrens play area, source of fresh air and daylight, you name it.

agree Steffen Walter : with Andrew; "courtyard space" also possible

agree Helen Shiner : also with Andrew - many residential buildings in Germany are built around an interior courtyard - the Hinterhof - onto which all flats look out and communal gardens, children's play area, parking for bikes, washing etc can be accommodated.
