German term

abzwacken

German to English Tech/Engineering Computers (general)
Natürlich liesse sich Windows 8 auf einer eigenen Partition neben Windows 8 installieren. Deutlich unverbindlicher
und vor allem Nerven-sparender ist die Einrichtung in einer virtuellen Maschine. Mit der FreeWare VirtualBox zwacken
Sie 20 Gbyte von ihrer Festplatte ab, um Windows 8 darauf zu installieren.
Proposed translations (English)
4 +2 set aside
4 +2 nip off

Discussion

Uta Kappler Sep 17, 2011:
In this context, I interpret the use of this term as a colloquial level synonym for "to set aside", "to take away" or "to grab". Meaning: 20 GByte of your hard drive will be "set aside" or "reserved exclusively" for the Windows 8 virtual machine.

This is the meaning in your context. Take a look at the example sentence below.
Example sentence:

To install Windows 8 on VirtualBox set aside at least 1024 MB or 1 GB of RAM and a hard drive space of about 20 GB.

pinch
Peer comment(s):

agree Ramey Rieger (X) : It IS figurative, Eugenia, and therefore justifiable. This is the right idiomatic idea - you can no more pinch off 20GB than you can set them aside.

agree Bernhard Sulzer : with Ramey; the right word; abzwacken means you nip, take or grab 20 GB worth of space off the HD. http://de.thefreedictionary.com/abzwacken http://www.answers.com/topic/nip
