Sascha, it'll depend on two things: first the target audience, as "beneficiation" appears to me to be exclusively American, and second exactly WHAT the "Veredelung" is - if it's treatment to remove impurities, pulverise, or what.

Well, the term "beneficiation" means "the treatment of raw material (as iron ore) to improve physical or chemical properties" (merriam-webster.com). I thought this might be fitting in this case, but apparently it does not work here, does it?

"Refinement" in this context is IMO well worth avoiding... and "beneficiation"?? Where did that come from?

Sorry about the folks who don't like this term -- this is indeed what it's called so far as I know. This term is used with raw materials like coal or iron ore that don't produce high quality product without further processing. I found over 43,000 hits for the term. That's quite a few for deciding it's "weird".

Lignite refining

is certainly the term I'd use; it's not exactly common in the UK as a fuel, so most of the sites are German translated sites, but I'd say this would be understood.
