In my opinion the word "BLOCK" has been Germanised! The term -block-, therefore means "whole" - as in one piece--Block- "am Stück" !
Ham can only be cut from a certain part, or of a certain section of the pork!

: "Blockschinken" is pressed ham, i.e. pieces of meat pressed into a (mostly square) mold, while a whole ham would be "ein ganzer Schinken", i.e. the ham as cut from the pork. Looks quite different, I assure you...
