German term

Umst.

German to English Medical Medical (general) Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT)
German medical report of adenoid and tonsil enlargement that led to adenotonsillectomy. On one separated line it states:

[date]: Adenoide +++, Tons.++, je 2 Umst.

The date listed is the same date the patient was admitted and had the surgery. The surgery was successful. Patient had antibiotic prophyaxis and then after surgery after swelling of uvula put on a steroid as well.

My question is what does Umst. stand for? (in German and/or English translation) I am thinking "Umstellung", but what exactly could that mean here?

I would especially appreciate input with someone familiar with the ENT field and this type of surgery.
I am assuming the +++ and ++ refer to the degree of enlargement of the organs.

Thanks,

Stephen

1 +3 suture ligature.

Discussion

SJLD Mar 5, 2011:
Stephen, if indeed this is referring to the state of the tonsils and adenoids before surgery (which it does seem to be), then there will be no mention of sutures at this point.
Ellen Kraus Mar 4, 2011:
Ellen Kraus Mar 4, 2011:
siehe auch KudoZ glossary. Terminus wurde mit suture ligature übersetzt.

agree Anne Schulz : with "Umstechungsnähte" (not "Umstellungsosteotomie", that's only for bones)

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Jonathan, Thanks a lot, based on the logic and on the peer comments, I am sure your answer is the correct one and I used it. In Stedman's Surgery Words they have it listed in the order "suture ligature". Stephen"
