German term or phrase: Schreibverkehr

English translation:sending and receiving letters
Explanation:
I believe this is an alternate form of "Schriftverkehr" - see below

I would also stress that (in my view) there is no clarity in the German as to whether these letters are kept private, monitored, or otherwise - as it sounds like an in-patient psychiatric facility, I think all we can assume is that this right to correspondence exists, not that the letters themselves will be kept private.

As philgoddard aptly points out, this needn't just be letters: so possibly "sending and receiving written correspondence" might be preferable, offering a suitably catch-all approach to all kinds of communications (while still, emphatically, avoiding any notion of privacy)

neutral  Jennifer Caisley: This is what I'd normally go for, but the German doesn't specify that these letters are kept private, monitored, or otherwise [edit] that's very true - but I can imagine certain cases where it may be necessary for the patient's health!

-> Wouldn't you think a right to sending and receiving letters is worth nothing if they're still allowed to snoop on you?

neutral  Björn Vrooman: Agree with Jennifer; it may be a privately privatized private clinic, but that doesn't make the correspondence private.//Just look at the law I mentioned below. It clearly(!) says correspondence can be monitored. It's ike prison, basically.

-> Sounds almost like a "Life of Others" scenario: Write away - knock yourself out. We'll just open a few of them letters when we please to see what kind of company you're keeping.

agree  Björn Vrooman: Phil's point is really not good, sorry. See section 22 and 23 of Berlin's Gesetz über Hilfen und Schutzmaßnahmen bei psychischen Krankheiten (PsychKG). Section 22 is Schriftverkehr (proves your monitored). Section 23: Telekommunikation (texts + emails!!).
