German term

BEIDIENST SR.:

German to English Medical Medical (general) surgery
Surgery report from an Austrian hospital.

OPERATEUR: xxx
ANAESTHESIST: yyy
**BEIDIENST-SR.**: Pfl. Robert ...
INSTRUMENTEN.SR.: Sr. Jutta ...

I'm assuming that the Sr. is the same as the SR.

Circulating Nurse

I think the 'SR' might be Schwester for nurse or sister. The circulating nurse, I think, sees to the general comfort of the patient but is not designated in the OP room as sterile. If an instrument gets dropped, for example, it becomes unsterile and it is the Circulating Nurse who picks it up. I'm not sure here but perhaps this is what is meant by 'Beidienst'. I can't find it in my PONS medical dictionary but there are a few google hits for 'Beidienst'

The Instrumenten. SR, by comparison, would be designated as \'sterile\' and therefore handles the instruments for the operation.

agree Fantutti (X) : I came to the same conclusion. She/he is the link between the sterile and unsterile environment . The Instrumenten.SR would be the scrub nurse.

Thanks. Nice to get so much support after being initially uncertain myself. Yes. Scrub Nurse rings a bell.

agree tnkw (X) : As I recall from UK theatre practice, the usual term for the nurse who fulfills the role of 'Instrumenten-SR' is 'scrub nurse' .. cf www.waycoolsurgery.com/team/scrub.shtml

disagree Fantutti (X) : No way! Much too general!! The following website gives you a good idea of what a Beidienst is. wrn.ac.at/chirurgie/Abteilung/OPLeitung.htm - 3k

disagree tnkw (X) : Since this is specific to theatres, 'circulating nurse' or even 'runner' is a term more likely to be used, at least in the UK.
