alone, in a party of three

cant really understand the marital context...

allein means alone
zu dritt means something like in a group of three or three of us...

in a marital context I would have thought it should read allein, zu zweit...alone, the 2 of us...
unless of course there is a child as well...

anyway you can do a literal translation of the german expression, but thats the connotation...

I do not think that "fifth wheel" or "third man in a boat" apply here - it's "just the three of us" (as opposed to being in a larger group of family/people). See how that fits into your context.
