German term

LI

German to English Science
"Diese LI beschreibt eine Methode zur Abschätzung ..."

The text contains instructions to carry out an experiment.

What does the abbreviation "LI" stand for??? - Is it possible that this actually is an abbreviation for an Englisch Term - "L..... Instructions" ???

Discussion

Non-ProZ.com Sep 10, 2002:
Type of Document LI describes the type of document not part of the actual experiment.

Normally you would find something like "This specification describes a method to assess..." - however, here the term LI is used.

I wonder if it could be something like "Laboratory Instructions" - but I never came across a term like this.

Wrecking my brain all day trying to figure out what it could be ... ;)

What sort of experiment is this? Or is it modeling/simulation? What is being estimated?

laboratory instructions

I'd go for laboratory instructions (Laborinstruktionen) if that is what your instinct tells you. Certainly from the context you have given it would seem the correct choice. There are 2,120 hits on google for "laboratory instructions" so it is obviously a common term. It is just unusual that it has been abbreviated, but there again, the Germans must be world champions in abbreviating things.

For example, the ref. below gives:
D. Kalb
Coordinator of Laboratory Instructions/Facilities Manager

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks a lot, Gillian! Inspired by your posting I did a Google search for "laboratory instructions"+LI and actually found a link to University Hannover that contained "Laboratory Instructions (LI)". I am therefore pretty confident that I am on the right track ... Thank you as well Karlo and Johanna - unfortunately your answers don't make sense in my context. I can finally put my weary mind to rest :) - All the best! Karl"
