German term

Predigtamtskandidat

German to English Art/Literary Religion
A job title on a birth certificate. I am looking for a direct English equivalency, but if I cannot find one I am considering the following:

Apprentice Minister
Apprentice Clergyman
Clerical Candidate

There is a character named Knoop in Theodor Fontane's book 'Meine Kinderjahre' who is a Predigtamtskandidat. Does anyone have an English translation of this book at hand? The character appears in chapter 13.

curate, assistant or associate

The priest in charge of a parish, self-supporting church, is the rector. The rector is elected by the vestry. Assisting priests the rector appoints may be called curate, assistant or associate. The priest in charge of a mission, supported financially from outside, is the vicar. The vicar is appointed by the bishop. (from 'Defining church terms', see link).

BTW, if you want to read on-line texts of literary works, go to www.bartleby.com. This is a voluminous site that contains most of the great works of a multitude of writers. Unfortunately, they only have 'Trials and Tribulations' of Fontane and not his 'My Childhood Days'.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "First of all, I want to express my thanks to everyone who offered suggestions. The suggestions were all thoughtful and well-reasoned and I took each one into consideration. Curate - the term offered by sirius and marcushm - is what I like the most. It is succinct and is most likely to be a direct equivalent. I very much like this line of logic: predigtamt = rectorship, curate = rector's assistant (and therefore one who aspires to be rector) predigtamtskandidat = curate BUT...there is a slight catch. Contrary to marcushm's source, wordreference.com (based on Collins) says that curate is a Catholic office, and that vicar is the Protestant equivalent. Since I am fairly sure that I am dealing with a Protestant birth, I am a little tempted to use vicar, but to me that term does not connote the idea of aspirant or next-in-line to the office of Predigtamt. Curate? Vicar? I think I'll stick with curate and be done with it, but if anyone can confirm or refute wordreference's definition, I'd be interested to hear from you. Again, many thanks to all who brainstormed with me! I love this site. "

Candidate for the (clerical) Ministry

alternatively Aspirant to the Ministry
or Junior Minister
I don't think apprentice is used in religious offices. Novice is used for orders, but I dont't think for the office of ministry.
Good luck

Mary Worby : Not junior minister, that sounds like a politician

candidates recommended for ordained ministry

I think that "Predigtamtskandidat" is an obsolete term mostly used in the 19th century or before...well, I found the term above on

(goes without saying that this is only a suggestion....and that it depends upon the date of issue of the birth certificate which term you'll use)

curate

I'm afraid I haven't got the English translation of Fontane's book either, but here is how I understand Predigtamtskandidat:

A "Kandidat" is someone who has received a university degree - which in this case must have been in theology. So the Predigtamtskandidat must be a graduate serving his "apprenticeship" in a Parish, which would eventually qualify him for a rectorship (Predigtamt).

Google hits for Predigtamtskandidat seem to corroborate this.

This makes the Predigtamtskandidat more or less the equivalent of a curate.

(In case you don't knowe, according to Merriam-Webster a curate is clergyman who is serving as an assistant (to a rector) in a parish.)
