German term

aus Jena

Non-PRO German to English Tech/Engineering
It is on a theodolite surveying instrument. The instrument is also marked Theo 010A, which corresponds to a known model of the type of instrument. Does "aus Jena" mean only that it was made in Jena, or from Jena, oris Jena the manufacturer, or is it part of the name of the instrument? I have seen similar instruments identified as Zeiss Jena, but Zeiss is not marked on the instrument in question.

from Jena

or rather 'Made in Jena'
It sounds pretty mysterious that it wouldn't be Zeiss and that there would be som sort of 'pirate' manufacturer of such a specialised product as a theodolite.
'aus Jena' means originating in Jena whatever is meant by it.
A manufacturer named Jena would have said 'Made BY Jena'

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "The answer was very good and very helpful. The theodolite is in the hands of someone who is advertising it as "AUS JENA", and I believe that it is in fact a Zeiss Jena Model Theo 010A produced in the early 1970s. I haven't yet figured out how to make the words on this form appear in English, so I hope that I have given the correct response. My German is limited to a very little that I learned before and during travel to Germany in 1990, when I learned enough to ask for a place to sleep and something to eat, and was helped a lot by people who spoke English. Danke, Bitte, Bob Campbell "

from Jena (as a city)

that's my conclusion after a thorough google-search.

Jena is mentioned since it is the monopoly in the field of development and manufacturing of high precision optical instruments in Germany.
