Memorandum in Opposition to...
I agree with your friend, generally it is an "opposition brief", but that would be the colloquial term, not necessarily correct for formal for reference in writing.
It could be called a "Memorandum in Opposition to Defendant's Motion to Dismiss" - which is generally an "opposition brief". If some reference is made to this document answering another document, then it would be correct to use the title of the document to which it is responding.
The two litigating parties often go back and forth in answering each others' Motions with briefs and memorandums in opposition, and the titles of these procedural documents can get quite complicated - and often do.
