Nina_PT Oct 30, 2011:
You're right Martin, That is the reason why I left the 'public' out, it could be just as well related to animal husbandry... who knows?
Martin Riordan Oct 29, 2011:
Muriel... Denis has said that there is no other context, so presumably he has been asked to translate just these two words. This means the interpretation is completely open - it may be public, private, human, animal. It makes it a bit difficult to give a confident translation!
Muriel Vasconcellos (X) Oct 29, 2011:
Is this a sign somewhere? Part of a document? Are you translating a document? If the subject is human health, then it's '(public) health surveillance'; if it's about environmental sanitation, then it's 'sanitary surveillance'.

Health Surveillance

Em muitos textos traduzidos do Brasil é muito usado 'Sanitary surveillance". No entanto, pelo número de hits do google p ex. nos EUA (apenas 44) penso ser 'Health Surveillance' o mais correcto.

public health surveillance

*IF* this is about human health, then it's 'public health surveillance'. In the public health field, 'sanitario' is translated as 'public health'.You can't leave out 'public'. (I have worked for WHO and the Pan American Health Organization for over 30 years.)

BTW, there is ALWAYS context, even if it's a sign hanging over a health post in the wilderness. In that case, the setting is your context.

Sanitary Surveillance

Just as valid as "Health Surveillance", I reckon it depends on the context at hand.

'Sanitary Surveillance' was more frequently used in veterinary epidemiology, although nowadays in my main line of work we tend to use something like "[disease name] surveillance" e.g. Bovine Tuberculosis Surveillance , HPAI (Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza) Surveillance or Bovine Spongiform Encefalopathy Surveillance

Again, as it has been mentioned, context, context, context. Without it, there are numerous viable alternatives
