Russian term

how many elevators are there?

Russian to English Tech/Engineering run-on sentences
Лифты - дом комплектуется 4-мя бесшумными лифтами фирмы "KONE": грузоподъемностью 1000 кг с остановкой на каждом этаже, пересадочными лифтами грузоподъемностью 900 кг.
I've got no problem here, other than how many elevators are there? A total of 4, or 4 of one kind and "a few" of another?

Discussion

David Knowles Feb 24, 2003:
I reckon the penthouses have a separate lift, because the floor layout is probably different.
Non-ProZ.com Feb 24, 2003:
to Elaine hmm, wonder how it would sound if i said "some!" ;)
Non-ProZ.com Feb 24, 2003:
to david i can't figure out how to copy the picture into here, but it looks like around 7 regular stories and two floors of penthouses
David Knowles Feb 24, 2003:
I think you're right. How many floors are there?
Non-ProZ.com Feb 24, 2003:
oops I meant "word," not work
Non-ProZ.com Feb 24, 2003:
to all what bothers me also is the work peresadochny. is there some kind of comparison being made between the elevator that stops on each floor and the peresadochny ones? I ask because I have worked in fairly new fairly buildings that had elevators for, say, floors 1-9 and then 10-whatever. kind of like "local" elevators. So could it be that there is one big elevator that stops everywhere (cargo) and 3 that stop on a certain number of floors?

one goods elevator and three passenger elevators

That's what I think. There may be a better term than "goods elevator" in US English. It's "goods lift" in UK English.

The 1000kg one must be bigger than the others (for carrying goods), and there\'d only be one big lift, so I think it\'s 1+3.
Peer comment(s):

agree Jack Doughty : Four altogether; I think the use of a colon at the end of the clause referring to four elevators must mean that what comes after it describes the total of four. But not clear to me how many 1000 kg and how many 900 kg.

I agree about the colon forcing four in total, but the rest gets less clear the more I look at it!
agree Igor Kreknin : > But not clear to me how many 1000 kg and how many 900 kg. // Yes. Absolutely.

agree Mark Vaintroub : Обычно грузовой лифт бывает 1, а остальные - пассажирские. Хотя точного указания нет.

Agreed - you have to deduce this
agree JoeYeckley (X) : I think that "freight" or "service" are the common terms for the heavy-duty elevators.

thanks - "service" sounds the right note!
agree Elaine Freeland (X) : It absolutely means four _in total_! The colon refers to both "run-on" parts: four lifts, OF WHICH some are 1000 and some 900 kg

agree Oleg Pashuk (X) : 1 cargo elevator (am.), and 3 passenger elevators
