Spanish term
abandonar lastres
Spanish to English
Art/Literary
Tourism & Travel
A travel writer is reminiscing about her time in Afghanistan:
"Allí quise abandonar lastres y correr en pos de nuevos e insospechados conocimientos que no busqué en libros, ni en museos, ni en monumentos."
I know "lastre" is a ballast or heavy weight and that she wants to free herself of that weight so she can go in pursuit of knowledge but I can't think how to say that in English.
Thank you.

throw caution to the winds
this also fits the context, and according to my trusty Collins, lastre can also mean "good sense; good judgment". To me, this is more feasible than "ballast, burden, inconvenience" for this context. At least, it's easier to make it fit the sentence!

Hi Claudia
I think there is a sense of both letting go of things (preconceptions, guidebooks and museums perhaps) and of being daring. I like the idea of freeing yourself of shackles and of throwing caution to the winds but have made these other suggestions as I think they are slightly more open to interpretation and are, in this sense, closer to the original.
