Can I have your opinion in my profile Thread poster: Mahmoud Rayyan

Peace be upon you all, Actually I got the idea of that thread from a post by another colleague, he also asked for help assessing his profile, so I was encouraged to do so. Can you please view my profile and give me some hints or feedback? B.R Rayyan | | | Please contact Mahmoud privately | Dec 10, 2008 |
Of course I cannot ban free speech here, but i would like to encourage you to adress your feedback to Mahmoud directly through his profile. | | | Raise your hourly rate | Dec 10, 2008 |
Unless you work extremely slowly, there seems to be a large discrepancy between your rate per word and your hourly rate. Your minimum hourly rate would equate to 225 words per hour or 1800 in an 8-hour day, which is decidely on the low side. I can't comment on the rates themselves, as I'm not familar with the market in your pair. Apart from that, I'd change "user's (manual)" to "user manual" ("likewise "user guide")and "religion related material" to "Religious materials... You're missing a couple of paragraph breaks in your list. Otherwise, my only comment would be that you seem to be trying to offer everything - your specialist fields are fine, but what do they have to do with pharma and biotech, agriculture, social studies and the environment (or religious studies, for that matter)? I believe that you'd be better off concentrating on what you're really good at and selling yourself on that alone. Edited: sorry Wolfgang - I didn't see your post before I added mine! Is this a new rule? I'm happy to remove my post and write directly to Mahmoud if you prefer.

Because unfortunately not everybody might be as constructive with his/her feedback as you are, and I just want to prevent things to be written, which actually should not be. | | | Tom in London United Kingdom Local time: 10:54 Member (2008) Italian to English

Can you please view my profile and give me some hints or feedback? B.R Rayyan Mahmoud, you are advertising one of your language pairs as Arabic to English but you wrote, in the title of this thread, "can I have your opinion in my profile?" You shouldn't make basic mistakes like this, in a forum where they can be read by everyone, especially not in the main title of the thread. It will not help your profile if you appear not to be competent in one of the language pairs you're advertising. If you are not completely fluent in English then you should not offer your services as a translator into English. To do so will be very bad for your general profile. I am writing this comment in the main thread because the main thread is affected by it.

Hi, I'm afraid I have to agree with Tom here. Your English is, of course, comprehensible but it is obviously not your native language and you may well experience difficulty in producing cohesive work. Your CV also contains errors which are potentially off-putting to clients. Good sample translation into English though, so it's surprising to see the basic errors in your post. I don't wish to be harsh but you need to be realistic here and focus on your translating into your native langua... See more Hi, I'm afraid I have to agree with Tom here. I feel I am lucky to post this thread after all, I mean If I didn't do this I would not know how mistaken I am. Thanks Tom and Susanna for your right comments, I already moved the Ara > English from my profile, just the Eng > Ara, my native and I will keep updating the resume to eliminate any errors, If you find anything else please don't hesitate. Thanks again for your precious comments. | |

Mahmoud Rayyan wrote: I already moved the Ara > English from my profile, just the Eng > Ara, my native.... Tell me, how many native English speakers are running around with a good enough mastery of Arabic that they can translate at a high level? Rather than remove the pair, you might want to consider forming a partnership with a good editor. Your English will surely improve over time, but even if it were extremely good, I think it would be valuable to establish such a relationship. I do not translate into German, though I pass every day as a native speaker of the language, but if I did I would certainly hire a very good German native as my editor. The keywords on your page are a bit overwhelming. I hope they work for you. "About me" is a bit sparse, more like bullet points. Maybe try telling a bit more of a story. If done well, that sort of thing usually catches my eye, and I suspect others may feel the same. Do you really have two English CVs uploaded? (I did not verify this.) You might try PDF as a distribution format. Looks like you've taken a fair shot at search engine optimization, though since I know very little about such things, I can't say if you've got it right. If you do the sort of Google search your dream customers would do and you show up on page 1 of the hit list, you've got it right. Otherwise, back to the drawing board. Of course there are ways of improving your ranking on ProZ searches, but I'm sure you know all that by now. Good luck | | | Mahmoud Rayyan Egypt Local time: 12:54 English to Arabic TOPIC STARTER This is wiser | Dec 17, 2008 |
