Good evening colleagues
here's a term that I'm a little foxed by. The encoder is described as "...ein einfaches, kostengünstiges Bedienelement." (The author also uses Eingabeelement elsewhere in the text.) Now am I right in thinking that "Element" is near-synonymous with "Bauteil" in this instance so that e.g "control component" is a possible rendering?

It's my experience that the "element" is often superfluous in normal UK usage and, if anything, you would tend to call it a device

: Yes, "control" or "control device" if it encodes the position of something the user is holding or moving.

Surely in common English, we simply call devices which control or operate something else a "controller" and we are dragged into the use of "device/equipment/element" by the German original. I have used control unit/control device etc in the past but am starting to wonder whether it is absolutely necessary. Just a thought......

: Your line of thinking is the same as mine except that in this case there is a distinction between a controller/control unit and a control. The former does not necessarily require manual input
