La douleur ne doit plus être une fatalité

French to English Medical Medical: Health Care Pain management report title page
This is on the title page of an annual report on Douleurs Sans Frontières. It's a full-page image of very positive tone, with scenes showing women and children in various "care" situations.
I've got a few ideas but your input will be valued.
Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

Non-PRO (1): Drmanu49

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Thanks Thank you again for all your contributions. With such help translating is fun!

what a difference knowing all the context can make...
Drmanu49 Nov 28, 2010:
What we teach our med students is that one of the main goals of medicine is to deal with Pain (physical) and Suffering (mental).
claude-andrew (asker) Nov 28, 2010:
Physical and mental pain It's physical and mental pain and suffering, as the report makes clear.
Bourth (X) Nov 28, 2010:
If "it may be useful to know that it's primarily Third World countries that benefit from the services of DSF", then this is aimed not at the well-to-do in the West who wish to relieve their own pain, but at the well-to-do in the West who wish to give money to relieve the pain of those suffering in the 3rd world : "YOU can ease their suffering", then!
writeaway Nov 28, 2010:
I wondered if it was more than just physical pain. Pain related to what? What's being discussed?
claude-andrew (asker) Nov 28, 2010:
Actually, in the main body of the report, the reference is always to "pain and suffering", never to "pain" alone, so on the title page "La douleur" can be taken to include "La souffrance".
claude-andrew (asker) Nov 28, 2010:
Contextual info It may be useful to know that it's primarily Third World countries that benefit from the services of DSF
claude-andrew (asker) Nov 28, 2010:
correction ... my own FIRST idea ...
claude-andrew (asker) Nov 28, 2010:
First, thanks and bravo for your Sunday morning inspiration!
My own fits idea was: "Pain you don't have to endure it" (The word "pain" is in larger font and above the rest of the caption).
And, quite so, no mention is made of the menfolk!
writeaway Nov 28, 2010:
what are the ideas you already have? why not share them with colleagues since they are being asked to share their owns ideas/translations with you?

pain/suffering need not be inevitable

Your "care situations" will determine whether "pain" or "suffering" or something else entirely is appropriate.

And "is not inevitable", "must no longer be inevitable", "need be inevitable no longer", "is no longer something that cannot be avoided", "need no longer be something that cannot be avoided", etc. ad infinitum are all possibilities.

Since your scenarios involve only women and children, are we to assume men don't feel pain (we who feel pain more than women, it is said)?

Note that there is pain and pain. Only pain that is unbearable - up to which point there is no point in eliminating it - becomes "suffering".

Are these people promoting morphine or euthanasia?

suffering is not necessarily fatal any more

just one more possibility
Peer comment(s):

neutral polyglot45 : this is a misinterpretation - it is not about death but about the fact that there is no need why people should suffer pain

Pain was not decreed in heaven

For variation, especially if we are talking about childbirth.

It fits very nicely in relation to the biblical curse "in pain thou shalt bring forth children" from Genesis.
