Spanish term

cama completa

Spanish to English Other Furniture / Household Appliances
Hello. Does anyone know what kind of bed this is? This is from an advertorial for an interior design company, describing a pilot home they have decorated (Spain). Going into UK English.

"Una vez arriba, un gran biombo de eslabones en lacado negro se alza como centro del dormitorio principal haciendo las veces de cabecero de una magnífica cama completa de ébano decorada con una colcha y unos cojines de ensueño..."

Thanks for your help
Simon

Carol yes, I agree it could be seen that way here.
Carol Gullidge Apr 7, 2011:
cama completa - @ FVS agree entirely (see my link), but this wouldn't make a great selling point for a designer decorating a pilot home. It's very unlikely that a pilot home would come with the base and/or mattress, and/or pillows, without being made up to enhance the general decor
FVS (X) Apr 7, 2011:
I think the essence here is that in Spain beds and mattresses are usually sold separately, so a 'cama' completa' comes essentially with mattress (and often headboard). Otherwise if you buy a bed it comes without a mattress.

made-up bed

as it happens, I was hunting for beds last night, and found this

implying that, as far as furniture shops are concerned, a 'cama completa' is the base + the mattress + a pillow, with perhaps a mattress cover thrown in.

However, for promotional real-estate purposes, the bed will almost certainly be made up, with an attractive bedcover or throw, cushions, etc. I'm pretty sure that is what they'd be getting at in this context, rather than that the bed has a mattress and pillows!

By the way, I think that in EN you could omit this, as the text goes on to describe HOW the bed is made up.
OR, you can simply say something like "... magnificent ebony bed adorned with ...

I'd mainly use this because it SOUNDS good in a ad. It has the semantic nuances of master, masterly..

magnificent bed, complete with decorated/adorned ebony...

tiene más sentido para mí
Peer comment(s):

neutral Carol Gullidge : as ébano is masculine, "decorada" must be referring to the bed (cama, f) and not to the ebony!

Of course, but that's assuming the source text contains no errors. It's just another idea since I'm not sold on any of the answers.

Since this is advertising copy, I don't think you want to get too technical.
