to keep a low profile/ to lower the profile of diría que son dos expresiones muy usadas en inglés moderno que se han trasladado al español, la primera con bastante éxito general, la segunda con más éxito en Chile

ahora me doy cuenta de que respondías a dos preguntas de spanruss aquí, en los comentarios, no a la expresión en cuestión en el kudoz, disculpa también ;)

@Oscar No. Perdón. Quería decirle a @spanruss que no me estaba claro de su pregunta, por las posibles traducciones que @spanruss sugerió. Perdone si no me expliqué bien. Es muy tarde aquí :-) By the way, en inglés to keep a low profile equivale a tener un perfil bajo. Sin embargo, to lower the profile of something, literalmente, es bajar el perfil de, es decir darle menos visibilidad o importancia. No son lo mismo. Pero sería más natural decir minimise o downplay.

"I am not sure enough from your question" al leer esa frase pensé q no captabas el significado de la expresión... yo no la conocía, es algo muy propio de Chile pero con las páginas que encontré quedaba claro, al principio también lo asocié con algo como tener un perfil bajo (alguien discreto, que no destaca) pero no terminaba de encajar, viendo otros ejemplos y sobre todo la página sobre jergas hispanas no me quedó duda de que era un giro idiomático muy peculiar

@Oscar Si, lo veo. Por eso hice el comentario para minimizar la opción que propuse antes del suyo. :-) Downplay tiene un sentido parecido en inglés. Pero como no tengo sus conocimientos locales, no puedo decirlo con certeza de mi parte. Solamente indicar que me parece lógico basado a las referencias y la explicación que ha dado.

@ domini es un giro propio del español chileno que quiere decir minimizar, no se trata de tener un perfil bajo sino de quitar importancia, las referencias y ejemplos que aporto son evidentes y esclarecedoras
bajarle el perfil a algo o alguien vendría a ser quitarle importancia, trascendencia, relevancia...

@spanruss If your text literally means to lower the profile of (different from keeping a low profile), then the suggested answers of minimise or downplay would seem to be good options. I am writing this here rather than as an agree because I am not sure enough from your question. keeping sth under the radar includes a different nuance of secretiveness, keeping out of sight/hidden, as in my refs.

Thanks, Phil. I think there may be question there of recreating a certain (idiomatic) effect produced by the somewhat non-standard usage of 'bajarle el perfil' (instead of 'restarle importancia', por ejemplo).

In my opinion, the average Chilean culture tends to hide and minimize serious misconduct (we can see it at all levels, even in our governments and spheres of power).
