Thanks Rita, this English idioms site looks like a valuable resource. This reminds me of another resource I saw appear at least 10 years ago on the Linguist List. After a few minutes of Internet digging, I couldn't find it directly in the Linguist Archives, but found another reference to it: English is Tough Stuff ---------------------- This poem is properly titled "The Chaos", and appeared in Drop Your Foreign Accent - Engelse Uitspraa... After a few minutes of Internet digging, I couldn't find it directly in the Linguist Archives, but found another reference to it: English is Tough Stuff ---------------------- This poem is properly titled "The Chaos", and appeared in Drop Your Foreign Accent - Engelse Uitspraakoefeningen, by G. Nolst Trenite (5th rev. ed., H. D. Tjeenk Willink & Zoon, 1929). It can be found at: http://www.jokes2go.com/poems/7237.html?21 It's worth the reading, both for native English speakers as well as for non-native English speakers. After you get through reading through it, and laughing as you try to pronounce everything, then you have to go back and memorize how to pronounce all the words. Thanks Rita. I was relieved to find I knew the meaning of most of the idions (not that I went through everything), but interesting to see the origins of some of them. Loved the Poem, Jeff! Have copied and pasted it to Word to get rid of the oodles of ads, so the friends I forward it to can read it in peace Have a good Easter, everyone!

For example, Jim was getting nowhere so he threw up his hands and abandoned the argument. This idiom alludes to a traditional gesture for giving up.! ------------------------------------ ▲ Collapse

Jeff Allen France Local time: 15:58 Multiplelanguages + ... use bite-size morsel approach with English Tough Stuff poem | Mar 24, 2005 |
Rita Heller wrote: and thanks Jeff - I will not show that to my friends who are trying so hard to learn English - they might throw their hands up Rita, The English is Tough Stuff poem is definitely something to show to language learners in bite-size morsels, couplet by couplet, rather than giving them an entire chocolate Easter bunny to eat in one sitting. I have usually only given the whole text to folks whose English is good enough for them to have fun reading through it. Jeff

Thanks Jeff for those sites. My eldest son is currently visiting an English tutor to help him with his writing skills in his final year of high school, and I've sent it to her too. She loved it!
