I posted two weeks ago about WFP being slow when typing. That was resolved by toggling the spelling checker.

But there are still areas where WFP is unacceptably slow (waiting 3-7 seconds):
1) Using the mouse and placing the cursor in any segment
2) Using ctrl+F to find a word in anywhere in the text
3) Searching in the TM, especially a remote TM

Some of this might tie in with the TM window.

Some of this might tie in with the TM window.
1) This window, whether docked or separate, constantly loses its proper table format and runs off to the right with cells that are stretched up. I have to close and re-open this window at least 4-6 times an hour.
2) Right now, I have the TM window closed (window>show view>unchecked), and when I place the cursor anywhere in a source or target segment, the TM window is reopened.

When I search for a word that is not present in the source or target, WFP gives an immediate "string not found". This means it CAN search fast, but something is incredibly slow in accessing the segments.

I'd like to hear if others have this problem. I might also have to contact WFP to find out if there is anything wrong with my installation. This occurs on both my desktop and laptop, however, Vista and Windows 7.
I think I am not too crazy about Java environments.

Thanks for sharing your experience.

Number of segments in TXML Sep 9, 2012

Does this happen with all TXML's, regardless of size, or only with larger ones? If so, what is the size (in number of segments) of your TXML?

What antivirus do you use? You may want to exclude Wordfast files (TM's, TXML) from checking: since they are plain text files, there is no point in checking them in real-time, since there is no way they can catch or transmit a virus.

File size and antivirus no effect Sep 9, 2012

Dominique, thanks for your reply.

This happens with all files regardless of the size. Although large files are generally slower than small ones, the huge difference comes from the latest upgrade (3.0 to 3.1)

I use AVG free. It is (and was) set to scan "infectable" files only.

"Resident Shield will scan files with following extensions: 386;ASP;BAT;BIN;BMP;BOO;CHM;CLA;CLAS*;CMD;CNM;COM;CPL;DEV;DLL;DO*;DRV;EML;EXE;GIF;HLP;HT*;INF;INI;JPEG*;JPG;JS*;LNK;MD*;MSG;

Scanning files without extension is on."

I'll try disabling AVG for 10 mins to see if it nevertheless makes any difference.

I am also curious about the changing lay-out of the TM window, but maybe I should make that a separate post.

Turning off AVG no effect; some more detailed observations Sep 9, 2012

Turning off AVG did not have any effect on the behavior of WFP3.1

I tested searching for a word in the source:
As soon as I hit "find", WFP jumps to the next segment that contains the word I am looking for.
This can be observed because the target segment (the cell) is immediately highlighted.
It then takes about 5 seconds (counting, not with a timer...) for WFP to highlight the actual word in the source segment.

It takes 4 seconds to highlight a random source segment that I double click with my cursor.

It takes 2 seconds to move to the next segment after committing the previous segment.

TM search is going a little faster now, this includes searching a remote TM.

My current file contains (only) 52 segments.

I am not observing significant differences between text vs table view.

Dear Lianne,

You say your have an active Remote TM? Do you have the option "Perform TM Lookup automatically" active? If so, please deactivate it; it is not for working with a Remote TM or for so big local TM.

Do you have "Active Transcheck"? If so, try to deactivate it and keep only "Enable Transcheck" to be able to use the toolbar button.

Do you work in the Table View? If so, try to work in the "Text View" instead. you should notice great difference.

How many programs do you open at the same time, messages, music players, many other programs on the same machine? Close any program you do not need or run them on another machine!

Was your local TM of (or did it include) a TMX source by any chance? If so, you should have cleaned the codes first.

HTH,
Yasmin

Hi Yasmin,

Thanks for the several tips to speed up WFP.

I see a major improvement when turning off the automatic TM lookup.

But how exactly does this affect working with a TM?

As for the other factors:
I have no active transcheck, no spell check as I type, I do work in table view (and I like it), don't see major differences in speed.

I have other programs open, and I do like to have a bunch of programs open (browser, oxford d

I have other programs open, and I do like to have a bunch of programs open (browser, oxford dictionary, source pfd, excel spreadsheet, skype runs in the background) but I avoid music players and unnecessary programs.

I do keep my TM's updated in tmx but always clean the code.

I guess if I decide to upgrade to my next pc, I am going to keep my old one running just for WFP...?
Or I need to change some of the setup that I have grown used to.

Thanks so far.

Automatic TM lookup Sep 10, 2012

The online help does say:

Warning: Automatic TM lookup may affect system performance

Lianne van de Ven wrote:

You will still be getting matches from your TM (if any) normally, but you will have to perform concordance searches (what Wordfast Pro calls TM lookups) manually.

If you have long segments and/or large TM's, it does make more sense to search only the words or expressions you are truly interested in.
