Yes, sometimes Aug 30, 2014

Although as my clients are all Spanish speakers, they can't really judge the quality other than by the reception it gets or the outcomes...

In over 30 years as a full-time translator, I’ve received a few compliments and only one negative feedback. Though compliments are good for the soul, I work on the theory that the best feedback a customer can give you is coming back to you and offering another job. On that basis, and as some of them have been with me for over 20 years, I guess that they are happy with the quality of my work… On the other hand, I must say that I never heard again from the client who in 1992 gave me the best p... I am not accustomed to receiving feedback of any kind, and operate on the assumption that "No news is good news".

Most of my clients "compliment" me on my work by sending me more.

Two clients, however, send me feedback on my work which I greatly appreciate. They, too, send me more work. What greater compliment can there be?

Often, but only upon returning Aug 30, 2014

It is extremely rare (though now and then it happens) that a client will take the trouble to call or write me specifically to praise my work.

However most - if not all - of my returning clients begin the conversation by stating that they were extremely satisfied from the previous service I provided them.

Some prospects contact me out of the blue, saying they had excellent references on me from Mr./Ms. Whatever, which leaves me puzzled, because the name often doesn't ring a bell. That's a good point! I'd rather have people praising my work to others than to me: I know I gave my best; they don't.

Of course, dissatisfied customers - if I have left any - will not contact me to say, e.g. "If you have got your act together already, I could have a job for you".

Complaints? Very few, and none so far that I didn't get satisfactorily resolved within a couple of hours at most.

By their coming back to me with new work.

Unfortunately, as Tim quite rightly says, 'No news is good news' is the adage that can most frequently be applied to our profession vis-a-vis feedback on wok delivered.

If that is correct English it's news to me.
I thought you said 'at times'.

At TIMES, I get compliments Aug 30, 2014

Sure! My clients know that I'm a pushover with basement-level self-esteem, so they send me flowers and shortbread cookies from time to time.

Seriously though, I get compliments from some of my clients in unexpected ways. For example, a client sends her checks in an envelope that she took the time to write my name and address on in her own handwriting. The check is usually inside a small note —also handwritten.

I'm wrapping up a 67-page translation (about 22,000 words)

I'm wrapping up a 67-page translation (about 22,000 words) that a client graciously sent to me. She told me she hoped I would accept the job because her client was so pleased my my previous work.

Usually when they're desperate. "You're the only person we know who can do this" or "It needs someone with your command of the target language".

When I do get compliments, they're generous. But I'd like to get them more often.

I guess the best compliment is when clients keep coming back.
