In fact, in my Finnish text, which is by the way a sort of internal corporate periodical, thus intended to be published though for a rather small audience (5000), an interviewee is saying that it was John Lennon, who said this phrase first.

With all my deep respect to John Lennon's work, I checked it on Wikipedia, an it says, that the phrase was reportedly coined by David Brower, founder of Friends of the Earth.

So, what do you think should I do? Should I point them out, that this is sort of mistake? Or, in case I'm being totally ignorant, could somebody please enlighten me on the relation between the phrase and John Lennon.
The company in question is not my client, my client is an agency with which I have excellent relationship.

I had never heard the name of John Lennon in connexion with this phrase widely used in the marketing world. It was 'invented', as far as I know, by Hazel Henderson.

If HH invented it, she did so by dropping the "ly"s of R. Buckminster Fuller when he used the phrase "Think globally, act locally". I am quite sure I read this in the late fifties, but I can't be sure in which book of his, since I read every one of them.

May be the phrase was actually 'coined' (that was the verb I could not remember yesterday) by Fuller in the fifties, but became more widespread in the seventies thanks to Henderson.

First of all, you should translate it, of course, this is what we do.
Then you are free to let them know that there seems to be no uniquely identifiable source for this statement. If they wish to enlighten their staff they may want to add a remark telling exactly this.
I guess the important thing is that they wish to communicate the statement and most companies would not like to have their employees running around telling customers John Lennon said this, if it was doubtful he did. It is not a proof of competence, after all.
So far, I always found clients grateful for friendly hints at mistakes in the texts they gave me. Still, if they insist having it translated with the mistake, you would have to do it, IMHO.
