''Your emissary *****crept away with his duffel bag in the middle of the laughter*****,'' Embi concludes his report to the bishop; so the novel ends. ''I was a little frightened and I ran as hard as I could back the way I had come. I was hoping that I would find the main road again.''

si allontanò furtivamente mentre gli altri ridevano
mentre gli altri ridevano non è il massimo, ma tra le risate può dare adito a contraddizioni

strisciare via..
to creep away means "strisciare via" in your case being a poetry you may find another Italian term for it. but basically that's what it means. It is to slip away (sometime noiselessly) in the middle of a conversation or other so not to be noted by anyone.
