la lotta continua

English Art/Literary Poetry & Literature
The text deals with the idealists in the generation of 1968ers:

And so la lotta continua, as we used to say.

There was a revolutionary organisation called Lotta Continua in the 70s in Italy, but it is not mentioned at all in the text. Which kind of idea does this Italian expression convey to English native speakers? was it simply a popular left-wing slogan with a foreign flavour? Thanks a lot in advance!

With Kim, I suspect that most native speakers of English would just shrug their shoulders at this. On the other hand, it may well have been familiar to people who were interested/involved in radical politics 30-40 years ago (your context).
Edith Kelly Jan 16, 2006:
It would not ring a bill unless you know a bit of Latin or Italian. I agree with Kim that 95% of native English speakers (without a Latin or Italian background) don't have a notion what it means.
Lorenzo Lilli (asker) Jan 16, 2006:
thank you all for your answers. In case it is not clear: I am translating from English into Italian, so I do not actually need a translation into English, I know that "la lotta continua" means "the struggle continues". I'm just wondering if "la lotta continua" rings a bell for English native speakers (btw, thanks for your opinion, Kim).
Kim Metzger Jan 16, 2006:
IMO, chances are at least 95% of English native speakers have never heard of it.

Continuos Struggle

Lotta Continua (the name means Continuous Struggle) launched a vicious counter-campaign accusing Calabresi and his colleagues of torturing and murdering Pinelli before throwing him out of the window. Unfortunately they had not a shred of proof, and before long the case landed in the courts where the judiciary dutifully fudged it and -- years later, when the fuss had died down -- shelved it altogether

Adriano Sofri (born August 1, 1942), Italian politician, intellectual, journalist, writer.

He was a central figure of Italian politics in the sixties as the leader of the extreme-left extraparlamentarian movement Lotta Continua (continuous struggle).

In 1988, he was later arrested with Ovidio Bompressi and Giorgio Pietrostefani for the murder of police officer Luigi Calabresi's on May 17, 1972. The charges against them were based on testimony provided by Leonardo Marino, an ex-militant who accused himself, sixteen years later, of having being the material author of the Calabresi's murder.

la lotta continua

as someone who was on the fringes of "radical" activity 30/40 years ago, i have to say that it rings not a single bell. I speak as an east coast person - maybe folks in california are familiar with it.

agree Refugio : maybe putting quotation marks around it
