If the original English uses an expression we have in Spanish, we should use it.
We say "pistoletazo de salida" for political contexts and also for sports and so many other events.
La utilizamos tanto para ese contexto, como para deportes u otro tipo de eventos.

Yo evitaría el término, puesto que no existe un equivalente claro en español, y simplemente diría "el evento X dará/dió paso a otros eventos". Mucha suerte!
