Italian term

causa astratta

This appears to be a legal concept (see link below) but I'm not sure how to translate it.

theoretical scope of the dealings

'causa' in terms of contractual relations is defined as 'funzione economico sociale'/'scopo pratico del negozio'
http://www.simone.it/newdiz/newdiz.php?action=view&id=227&in...

and astratto seems to mean that it doesn't regard the specifics of the dealings, but rather the fact that in the abstract, the contract is valid (per your link)

other ways to translate might be
non-concrete scope of the dealings/theoretical economi-social function of the dealings/act etc.

Actually maybe the word 'theoretical' is ambiguous - just 'scope of the dealings' or 'actual scope of the dealings'

Hi Dominic, I think purpose would work perfectly well - my answer is just a kind of 'made up' rendering of what I understand the concept to be - I'm sure the actual terms could be improved on considerably!
Note from asker:
Hi Patricia. I've been thinking about this for a while now and wondered what you thought about "actual purpose" as opposed to "actual scope". Thanks, Dominic

abstract/undisclosed/theoretical purpose

I like "purpose" very much. These are my proposals about "astratta".
