The Egnatia continued to be an important road even during the Byzantine period, as it connected the ports of the Orient and the Black Sea with Thessaloniki and the Adriatic Sea. During the Turkish Occupation period, the Egnatia was the major terrestrial commercial road, providing access to the ports of the Mediterranean.

Adriatic-Egnatia arterial route
I assume it's clear from your text that this is the route of the Egnatia Motorway, which runs from the Adriatic (from Igoumenitsa on the Adriatic coast)eastwards, more or less following the route of the old Via Egnatia.
"Axonas" translates literally as "axis". "Axis" doesn't seem quite right to me. The word is often used in the sense of a major route / key route, and there's also the British term "trunk road", but I think the best and most official-sounding translation in this context is "arterial route". For "arterial route" / "arterial road", see the OECD's information about Pan-European transport routes.

\"Transport axis\" exists in English as a modern and rather specialist term (it can be found in transport dictionaries), and is not necessarily the most appropriate term in a historical context.
I have found \"Egnatia axis\" on at least one website, where the context was very definitely road-building, tunnel construction etc.
So really it\'s a question of the intended readership for this text.

: The asker has submitted a lot of questions on the History of Epirus.And as such tranlation should be made in view of that context...the motorway is a new project built on the very same alignment of the old Via Egnatia Axis.Pls check the Historic info..

Yes, I accept that this is mainly a historical text. I'd think carefully about using the word "Axis". Terms such as "road axis", "transport axis" are probably used mainly by specialists (transport specialists, motorway construction specialists).
