Discussion

uparis Jun 12, 2003:
The term is probably "air entrainment" -
Michael Stolte Jun 12, 2003:
could it read "air entrapment" ???

Peer comment(s):

agree Cilian O'Tuama : agree with 'entrainment' (sorry, didn't see) but not sure about your translation

Thanks, Cilian; honestly, neither am I!
agree uparis : Hadn't read your comments, either - yes, you're right about "air entrainment", I think, but "gute Luftmitführ" is not what I would put

Thanks, uparis - see above; I think your suggestion just might pass.

Luftundurchlässigkeit

if it reads "air entrapment" ?????????
Peer comment(s):

disagree David Moore (X) : If it is "air entrapment", I don't see how "air impermeability" (=Luftundurchlässigkeit") can possibly fit

Luftabsorbtion

s. Link, betrifft zwar Beton, aber das Problem scheint das gleiche zu sein.
Peer comment(s):

neutral David Moore (X) : I'd rather not lubricate MY car with concrete.... The point is that air inclusions can enhance the properties of the concrete, or not, if the proportions are wrong. I see it as quite different.

Sehr witzig, wie auch Ihre Antwort.
disagree uparis : Nope - the point of lubricating oil is to keep air out, not to "absorb" it...

Luftabscheideverhalten

I'm pretty sure we're talking about air ENTRAINMENT here (that's all I've ever seen in texts on lubes we've had).
The idea is presumably that the oil doesn't drag air with it, so I suggest "Luftabscheideverhalten" (because it's supposed to be "good" air entrainment - dragging in air is NOT a desirable characteristic).
There may be a better term, though -
Peer comment(s):

neutral David Moore (X) : I'm reluctant to disagree here, but "air entrainment" is quite clearly the "dragging along of air with the lubricant", according to E-E dictionaries. We can't describe "air entrainment" as good or bad; ANY of it is undesirable.

You're right, of course - but Pro Lingua's text apparently says "good", so waddayado there... ?

gutes Luftabscheidevermögen

In the context of air entrainment in oil, the word 'good' is highly misleading.

From ref 1:
"Air Entrainment is the primary source of
oxygen in the oxidation failure of oil. New oil contains approximately 10% air at
atmospheric pressure. Splash-lubricated
gearboxes, bearing housings utilizing
flinger rings or slingers, and compressors are all aeration-prone applications. Excessive aeration has a negative effect on acid number (AN), oil color, film strength and viscosity. In addition, air entrainment can lead to accelerated surface corrosion, higher operating temperatures and oil varnishing."

From ref 2:
"Castrol B 353 wurde auf Rizinusbasis spezifisch für hochtourige Viertakt-Rennmotoren entwickelt. Seine geringe Schaumneigung und das hervorragende Luftabscheidevermögen prädestinieren es für Trockensumpfschmierungen."
