Spanish term

como sedimento de los espejismos de la modernidad

Spanish to English Art/Literary Journalism Article by curator
Hi everyone! I'm translating an article written by the curator of a photodocumentary on El Salvador. I published some questions on the accompanying information for the photos previously on Kudoz, concerning the Maras gangs. I'm finding this article by the curator quite tricky to translate, so any ideas would be appreciated. This line comes at the end of the first paragraph of the article. Thanks!

as a residue of the illusions of modernity

"Sedimento" being matter suspended in water and deposited. It's tempting to put "dregs", but the effect would be too tendentious, I think. An "espejismo" is of course a mirage, literally, but here "illusions" seems more suitable.

Not a great piece of writing in Spanish.

agree Robert Forstag : Or, perhaps: "represents nothing more than a residue of the illusions of modernity." I agree that we're not exactly dealing with prize-winning prose here....

Thank you, Robert. At least this phrase is more or less comprehensible, which is more than can be said for those in some of the other questions.

Thanks, MEW :)
agree Pablo Julián Davis : Nicely fashioned, out of some pretty lumpy clay...!

Thanks, tocayo :) Curators often write like this, I find; they tend to try too hard.

as the seed of the mirages of modernity

A suggestion. "Sedimento" is used in a figurative sense, meaning the fundamental layer of something.
