American Heritage Dictionary, 4th Edition:
A sparsely inhabited rural region.
Concise Oxford English Dictionary:
■ noun chiefly N. Amer. sparsely inhabited rural areas.
Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary (edition 7):
back•coun•try /bækkʌntri/ noun [U] (NAmE) an area away from roads and towns, especially in the mountains.
The word متروکه is against the definitions provided by the first two dictionaries. You based your answer on Wikipedia which I don't think is as reliable as dictionaries.
