I now know that there is a happy abundance of science writers who pen the most lucid(明晰的) and thrilling prose-Timothy Ferris, Richard Fortey, and Tim Flannery(澳大利亚第三代本土古生物学家)are three that jump out from a single station of the alphabet (and that's not even to mention the late but godlike Richard Feynman(美国,1965年诺贝尔物理学奖得主))-but sadly none of them wrote any textbook I ever used.

I don't really see why the author put it this way. Just confuses the reader without having any impact or wit. (or am I missing something?) I wouldn't be too literal when translating, I guess.

jump out = jump out at you = stand out? = 突出/显眼?
jump out at somebody = If something jumps out at you, you notice it immediately. eg That's a very effective advertisement - it really jumps out at you. (Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary)
