He was taken instantly

Non-PRO Not for points English Other Cinema, Film, TV, Drama
I'm working on a reality show. There has been a traffic accident. A man has been killed in the collision, his girlfriend survived the accident. His friend says: "He was taken instantly, but she is at hospital right now." Does "taken" mean that he was taken away by the ambulance?

I'm not sure because earlier the friend said: "He went home" as a euphemism so I wondered if "He was taken instantly" could be another euphemism.

agree Charles Davis : Often a Christian expression, as you suggest; "taken by God".
