French to English Bus/Financial Finance (general) Bank letter on operational risks
Same internal bank document as my last question. Here I confess that I'm a bit stumped as to what EXACTLY is meant by 'connus' in this sentence (and so is my half-French husband).

"Mise en place de « Correspondants Risque Opérationnel » dans les Directions :
Les Correspondants "Risque Opérationnel" sont connus pour les principaux services de la Banque X.
Il faut que chaque service écrive ses procédures sur la saisie des incidents."

Does it just mean that they already know who these 'Correspondants' will be (i.e. their names)?

Thank you to everybody - once again, lots of helpful input from everybody. I wish I could award points to you all.
Jane Lamb-Ruiz (X) Jul 24, 2005:
If you are 100% sure they are people, don't you think Risk Monitor is better? After all...correspondent in English is confusing, IMO..What do you think?
sarahl (X) Jul 24, 2005:
or that's what it seemed to mean in the last OR seminar I interpreted :-)
sarahl (X) Jul 24, 2005:
what I meant was, representative suggests some kind of PR role, when OR is more of an internal function, assessing the risks involved in a potential transaction for your own dept.
Non-ProZ.com Jul 24, 2005:
NB. 'Correspondent' has been suggested. Any thoughts?
Non-ProZ.com Jul 24, 2005:
Suggestions welcome... Although I don't think Representatives necessarily implies a full-time role.
sarahl (X) Jul 24, 2005:
yes they probably have a list of names, are you sure about representatives though? Usually, every dept puts someone in charge with OR among other things, I don't think it's a full time thing.
Non-ProZ.com Jul 24, 2005:
I should perhaps have given more context on this question. It is fairly clear from a later paragraph (which refers to the 'Correspondants' having been trained) that they are individuals, and not banks/entities. I have opted for 'Representatives' for 'Correspondants' in this instance.

while this could be something to do with correspondent banking, it seems unlikely since not all of the \'principaux services\' would involve correspondents in this sense. I think in this case this is simply more of the jargon and refers to people within the organisation:

\'Operational Risk Correspondents, whose role is to coordinate the collection of risk event data \'

\'These mechanisms now include some 20 Operational Risk Correspondents, located in all the Company’s units in France\'

neutral Jane Lamb-Ruiz (X) : If this is the Dexia site, your first doc is translated from the French I believe..and, in that case, I am not at all sure that correspondent is a good word in English because it is apt to be confused with correspondent banks, IMO

sure, but I'm not proposing any particular translation for 'correspondant', merely suggesting that it refers to people within the bank

SEE- you're on track

Bank X is knowlegeable/is aware of /knows about/knows of, or simply knows the Correspondants' but it is not clear to what extent the bank is knowledgeable aboutor knows the Corr.
