French term

variance supposée commune

French to English Medical Mathematics & Statistics validation of analytical procedures
This comes from a common technical document, validation of analytical procedures. They are testing the precision of a method for assaying the quantity of one drug substance in a drug product.

The statistical analysis includes a table of results called "comparaison des moyennes" with figures for "variance supposée commune", "t calculé" and "t théorique".

Discussion

Helen Genevier (asker) Aug 23, 2007:
Hello Eric, it's the label for a row in a table testing the "fidélité" of an assay. There are 3 series of determinations on 3 days, 6 tests per day. In the table are 3 columns to compare results on day 1 to day 2, d1 to d3 and d2 to d3. The first part of the table is "comparaison des variances", with rows "variances" (one value for each of the 6 days, eg 1510355 for d1 and 1907238 for d2), F calculé (1.26277 for comparison of d1 and d2) and F théorique (5.05034). "Les moyennes sont homogènes et peuvent être comparées". Then there is the "comparaison des moyennes" section of the table, with a value for "variance supposée commune" for d1 vs d2 (1708797), t calculé (0.78888) and t théorique (2.22881), "Les différences entre 2 séries de mesures ne sont pas significatives".
Eric Bullington Aug 23, 2007:
Hello Helen. Out of curiosity, what are some sample values of this "variance supposée commune"? Is this the label for a column or row or difference values?

calculated 't' / theoretical 't'

between d1 and d2. Nothing to do with standardising the normal distribution.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thank you, this got me on the right track. It looks like they test first the validity of using the t test by seeing whether the groups have equal variance, and when that is confirmed they do a t test."
